Doreen Rappaport and Eric Velasquez’s Ruth Objects: the Life of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, is a distinctive picture book bio. Ruth Behar’s Letters from Cuba is a novel, based on the history of Jews emigrating to Cuba in the 1930s. Jewish-themed books, just like books about the experiences of other groups, should enrich, inform, and entertain all readers.ĭeborah Hopkinson’s We Had to be Brave: Escaping the Nazis on the Kindertransport is a middle-grade nonfiction book which is age-approrpriate in presenting difficult material. There are several other examples of books which could have been included. While there are several fine books on this list, it would be impossible to say that they are all more distinguished than several outstanding books with Jewish themes, including Uri Shulevitz’s Chance, which has been recognized by, among other outlets, the NY Times, Publishers Weekly, SLJ, The Horn Book, and Jewish Book Council. Most important, high literary and artistic quality must always be part of the criteria. While it would not be possible to necessarily include works about every group in our country and the world, Jewish themes are here conspicuous by their absence. I know that you have frequently highlighted Jewish-themed books here on your blog.
(Vivy Cohen, an important work dealing with sexism and people on the spectrum, is a book in which the character’s Jewish identity is incidental.) There are no Jewish-themed picture books or nonfiction. I am disappointed at the almost complete absence of Jewish-themed works.
Soon it will be December and 31 Days, 31 Lists will start up again. Many of my own personal favorite didn’t make it onto the list this year. Please note that I am not calling this a “Best” list, for the obvious reason that at 101, things are bound to be left off. It’s a great way to get to know one another, and provides excellent training should anyone wish to join an ALA committee in the future.Īll 101 books on this list are appropriate for readers 2-12. On our committee we’ve had managers and clerks and librarians all working together.

They’re a great way to introduce your community to some of the best books of the year (and a way to highlight titles that might be easily overlooked). This list is a testament to the dedication of the people of this committee and I couldn’t be prouder of them. In the end, we may have ended up reading more books for this list than ever before. Thanks to the magnificent efforts of staff members like Jessica Iverson, however, deliveries were made in a safe and efficient manner to every committee member in their homes. When the pandemic closed our library in March it also kept all the books we were trying to read sequestered away. 2020 proved to be a particularly difficult year for us. And so the 101 Great Books for Kids list was born.Įvanston Public Library is now pleased to announce the results of our incredibly hardworking 101 Great Books for Kids committee. But since I moved to the Chicago area, I knew that I wanted that kind of a list for my own library.
Whatever you call it, it takes an entire year to pull it together. In the past, this list has gone by any number of names. You see, since 1901, New York Public Library has produced a list of its favorite children’s books. When I left New York Public Library after 11 years, I took a number of things with me.
